The starter edition was announced last week by microsoft for release in five more emerging markets (see our ). The cut-down software limits the users in a number of ways including number of applications running at once, printing and network abilities. Gartner's research has pointed out that the lack of features and limitations with applications will be very frustrating for users who may have had access to computers before at school or in cyber-cafes. Upgrade issues are also a concern with no path given to a user who buys the starter edition but wants more. The only course of action for that user currently is to go out and buy a full-price copy of either xp home or xp professional.
